The LoRaWAN Back-End Interfaces Specification

In addition to the primary LoRaWAN specification, there is also the LoRaWAN Back End Interfaces specification, released in October 2017 and updated in October 2020. This is a supplemental document intended to standardize the functionality and message flow of the various software-defined network components, as well as the communication among those components during Over-the-Air Activation (OTAA) and the roaming procedures of end devices. In fact, the implementation of the LoRaWAN Back End Interfaces standard makes successful roaming possible by making it easier for different network providers to interconnect their networks.

This document describes the standard interfaces and message flow between:

●        Network server and a join server

●        Join server and an application server

●        Two network servers (in the case of roaming traffic routing)*

*   See the full specification document for this interface definition.

Note

The interface between the network server and the application server is outside the scope of this document.
